We took a family trip to Williamsburg, Virginia last summer. As we toured the town, we heard how the people of the Colonial Era changed history.

But how we can be sure Patrick Henry, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson were real? None of us have met them. Couldn't they have been made up to fulfill a patriotic function? Does it matter?

There are two good reasons we know they were real. First, there are reliable historical accounts. Second, we can see the results of their actions in our world today.

Adam and eve are no different. Some people say, however, that they were made up to serve a theological function. They want to replace the history recorded in the Bible with a different history, one that says "Adam" and "Eve" represent our first human-like ancestors that lived millions of years ago.

Saying this is like denying the reality of our Founding Fathers. Adam and Eve are essential for understanding the history of the world. Without them, there can be no history.

In his gospel, Luke traces Jesus' genealogy to Adam. He then says Jesus went into the desert to be tempted by Satan, the same spiritual being who tempted Adam thousands of years before.

The apostle Paul makes the same comparison in Romans. Adam brought death into the world; Jesus brought life. In fact, Jesus came to save us because of what Adam did.

When Paul is in Athens, he explains that all people are descended from one man. When Paul writes to the Ephesians, he says marriage goes back to the first couple. And when Paul talks about roles in the church, He refers to the first temptation.

This is a very different history than the evolutionary history of the world. Those who seek to merge them have to deny aspects essential to each.

Charles Darwin understood this. One os his friends living in the United States wanted to create something called 'theistic evolution'. Darwin thought this was a strange idea; the whole purpose of his theory was to replace the history recorded in Genesis.

Darwin, of course, was not the first person to re-interpret the physical world according to his own views. Adam and Eve to do so, too. We are still living with the consequences.

SECCIÓN VII. 2: THE SCIENCE OF ANIMALS

LESSON 2: THE SCIENCE OF ANIMALS

(Devotional from "IS GENESIS HISTORY?")

Scripture Selection: Genesis 1.24-25; Genesis 2.19-20; Job 38.39; Job 40.5
Speakers: Dr. Del Tackett and Dr. Todd Wood, Biologist.

"I have a yellow labrador who love chasing balls. She never tires of it. The little terrier up the street, however, roots around in the yard looking for moles.

God had something curious in mind when He made animals. Genesis tells us they were created according to their kinds on the last two days of creation. On the sixth day, He brought to Adam to name.

God apparently built into each animal kind all sorts of possible variations whitin limits. We can look at dogs and cats to see the potential, but dogs don't become cats and cats don't become dogs.

This seems to be one of the reason God brought animals to Adam. It's as if God the designer wanted Adam to notice the unique characteristics in each kind. By naming them, Adam was indentifying their uniqueness.

In one sense, Adam is the first scientist; he is examining the natural world, figuring out similarities and differencies, then verbally categorizing  them. Science is the process of trying to understand more about God's creation in order to explain it and control it.

What's neat is that as we enter into that process -even if we're just observers- we can actually learn more about God through what He has made. This seems to be why God talks about His creation when He's questioning Job. God knows how complex and wonderful it is. He designed it to amaze us.

But the creation is now fallen. Paul tells us it is in "bondage to corruption." The animals are no longer as they were at the begining. Nor are we.

This means two things for science. First, there is a tendency for some scientist to ignore what happened in history. When they do this, they mistakenly interpret the world. Second, these mistakes can seem plausible because people, though fallen, are still intelligent.

It seems this is what happened to Charles Darwin. He was fascinate with animals, but rejected Genesis as a book of history. He therefore interpreted animals according to his own limited understanding.

Although a brillant man,  Darwin looked at the changes within animals kinds and leaped to the conclusion there must be changes between animal kinds. His theory of evolution from common descent, although plausible, is ultimately wrong.

The Psalmist tells us this is what happens if we lean on our own understanding. We can follow a path that seems right, but ultimately leads us in the wrong direction.

LESSON 1: THE ORIGIN OF LITERALLY EVERYTHING

Scripture Selection: Hebrews 11.1-10
Speakers: Dr. Del Tackett and Dr. Paul Nelson, Philosopher.

I remember being in the 10th-grade biology class studying evolution. The textbook taught the earth was billions of years old, life evolved from bacteria, and humans were related to monkeys.

I instinctively understood this way a different history than the one in Genesis. It was presented as the findings of science, however, so it must be true. I reasoned if the earth was old and we evolved, then Genesis must somehow be mistaken. This included Adam and Eve, a global flood, and the tower of Babel.

Thankfully, I was challenged by a Sunday School teacher with a simple proposition: "you'd better research both sides first." When I did, I realized Genesis was a realiable book of history.

Fast forward to a few years ago. My daughter began asking me the same questions I had asked. Since I'm a filmmaker, I decided to make a documentary about Genesis.

As I dug in, I realized it would need to be about everything. That's why Genesis is so important. It presents a history of where we came from, why we're here, and what our issues are.

Yet when you hold Genesis up against history taught in most schools, books, and media, it's radically different. Some people may even find it laughable, but that's what the Greek philosophers on Mars Hill thought about Jesus' resurrection, too.

History is what the author of Hebrews encourages his readers to consider. He knows they've been facing difficult times and struggling in their faith. As encouragement, he reminds them how God worked in other people's lives long ago.

The first thing he says is that the universe was created by the word of God. He's talking about Genesis 1, and he's reminding them God made everything we see from absolutley nothing. That's real power.

He then talk about Abel making a sacrifice, Enoch pleasing God, Noah building an ark, and Abraham traveling to Canaan. He wants them to remember that God was interacting with real people in real places in a real way back then.

And He's doing the same thing today.

We just need to remember history. Whether it's Noah, Abraham, or ourselves, He's interacting with us in a real ways that we can see, know, and trust. Faith isn't a leap in the dark, it's an assurance and trust based on real actions by a powerful God that happen in actual history: your history and my history.

REFLECTION:
How have you seen God work in your personal history?

SECCIÓN VI: ¿Es el Génesis historia? Is Genesis History?

SECCIÓN VI ¿ES EL GÉNESIS HISTORIA?
IS GENESIS HISTORY?
http://isgenesishistory.com/

"IS GENESIS HISTORY? is a fascinating new look at the biblical, historical, and scientific evidence for Creation and the Flood. Learn from more than a dozen scientists and scholars as they explore the world around us in light of Genesis."

“Nothing in the world makes sense except in the light of Genesis.”
  ~ Del Tackett ~

"What exactly happened, “In the beginning …” and in the time that followed? Throughout most of history, Genesis was considered an accurate and reliable record, but over the past 250 years, it has become one of the most controversial books of all time. Events highlighted—including the Creation of the universe in six days, the existence of the real Adam and Eve, and a global Flood destroying the world—are now questioned by many… including some Christians. Where can reliable, well-researched answers be found?

New Documentary Shines New Light February 23

IS GENESIS HISTORY? is a comprehensive documentary featuring scientists and scholars looking at the world and explaining how it intersects with the history recorded in Genesis. From rock layers to fossils to lions to stars, this fascinating film will challenge and change the way you see the world. Showing in theaters as a one-night event on Thursday, February 23 only, IS GENESIS HISTORY? shines new light on our origins, providing a positive argument for Biblical Creation and the Flood. Dr. Del Tackett, creator of “The Truth Project,” serves as your guide—hiking through canyons, climbing up mountains, and diving below the sea—in an exploration of two competing views … one compelling truth."
